Summary of Education and Relevant Experience

B.A. Stanford University; M.A., Ph.D., University of Chicago; M.P.H., University of Washington.
Trained in sociology and public health, Mary Lou Finley has a range of interests, including social movements and nonviolence studies; social change; poverty and homelessness; race, class, and gender studies; the sociology of health and illness; globalization and development in the global South; health issues in developing countries, and the history and spiritual traditions of India. She is a coauthor of Doing Democracy: the MAP Model for Organizing Social Movements, and has published work on the civil rights movement, access to health care and issues in higher education. Her professional experience includes work with community organizing and social-service organizations, particularly organizations serving the needs of homeless women. She is currently collaborating with faculty at other universities on a project on social movements and climate change; consulting with community groups on developing strategies for change; and working with a national committee on the planning of the 40th anniversary commemoration of the civil rights movement in Chicago.
