Chair of the Art Therapy Program Presented at International Symposium
For many years, most American art therapists have only been able to read about the work and scholarship being carried out by their peers in other countries. "Art Therapy in Global Leadership" offered a rare opportunity to learn first-hand about art therapy traditions and techniques practiced around the world. The symposium took place March 18 at Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y.
One of the two keynote speakers at the symposium was Janice Hoshino, Ph.D. The title of her presentation was "The Family Within a Multicultural Network." She addressed the historical development of the current mental healthcare system, the role creativity has to play within that network and the implications of art therapy for marginalized populations.
Hoshino is the chair of the Art Therapy program and a core faculty member at Antioch University Seattle. She is a board certified clinical art therapist and a licensed marriage and family therapist. Her professional interests include marriage and family therapy and multicultural issues in art therapy. She recently collaborated on a documentary on Japanese Americans interned during World War II. Hoshino is also the co-author of a book on family art therapy to be published in fall 2006.
