What does whole systems design mean?
Whole systems design focuses on the interplay of science, the humanities and the social sciences as crucial to understanding how the world operates and how it could operate more positively in the future. This systems approach to designing a sustainable future prepares students to go beyond narrow problem definitions and view complex situations in terms of their contexts, interrelationships and dynamics.

How do I benefit from studying in a Center for Creative Change program?
In the Center for Creative Change, you:
• may choose electives from other center programs to augment your specialization area
• take six core classes integrated with students from the other program areas
• can wait until early into your first year of study to choose your program if you’re undecided about which degree program to pursue
• earn graduate certificates in integrated skills for sustainable change and systems thinking and design in addition to your master’s degree in whole systems design

Why should I choose this program over a more traditional one?
Students who choose whole systems design are self-directed learners who have a passion for creating synthesis from apparently disparate elements. They also have the discipline to set boundaries, goals and deadlines for themselves. In this progressive form of education, students take responsibility for the focus of their studies. Whole systems design calls the route to graduation a “degree process" rather than a “degree curriculum."

What are the occupations/backgrounds of the students?
During the past 20 years, students have come from a variety of organizations, jobs and locations. These include positions in manufacturing, service, communications, high-tech, education, nonprofit, governmental and consulting organizations. The common thread among these students is their interest in and commitment to imagining and creating new possibilities for the future.

What types of work do alumni do?
Whole systems design graduates work in positions as varied as educators, consultants, trainers, managers, anthropologists, dispute resolution specialists and environmentalists. The variety of occupations defies typecasting.
